The story
In Tasmania’s rugged coastal bush, surrounded by the native trees of Beech and Rimu, sits Kawatiri Coffee Roasting, proudly all ‘bush’.tasman coffee fresh hand-roasted coffee In this idyllic spot, the aroma of freshly roasted beans fills the air and a small deck overlooks the waves crashing onto pristine white beaches. In the background, the exotic calls of New Zealand’s native tuis and bellbirds trill amongst the lush coastal bush.
Here at the roastery, Dom has been busy establishing his dream of producing quality artisan coffee. He has invested in upgrading his equipment and ensuring consistent testing and sampling of each batch. He is also passionate about using an organic certified bean-to-cup process and building his business in a sustainable way.
He has communicated directly with cooperatives of farmers to establish relationships for direct trade of green beans and is committed to utilising a natural air roasting technique that doesn’t use gas. This is important as gas uses a finite resource and has high embodied energy as well as leaving gas by-products on the beans that are not good for the taste or health of the coffee. The resulting coffee has been well received by cafes, country stores and supermarkets from Northland to Dunedin as well as a loyal online customer base from around the world.
